Abstract:
The Lindblad master equation is a foundational tool for modeling the dynamics of open quantum systems. As its use has extended far beyond its original domain, the boundaries of its validity have grown opaque. In particular, the rise of new research areas including open quantum many body systems, non-equilibrium condensed matter, and driven-open quantum simulators in general, call for a critical revision of its regimes of applicability. In this seminar, I will follow our recent pedagogical review [1] and, after a general introduction to open quantum systems, I will focus on the Lindblad master equation and I will re-examine the three standard approximations behind it (Born, Markov, and Rotating Wave Approximation), highlighting where they might fail with a series of examples and case studies. This talk will serve as an introduction to the formalism of Markovian open quantum systems to those who have never seen it, while I hope to offer some useful insights also to the seasoned Lindblad practitioners.
