Título:“The study of plasticity in metals by molecular dynamics simulations”

Resumo:

Plasticity is often controlled by dislocation motion, which was first measured for low pressure, low strain rate conditions decades ago. However, many applications require knowledge of dislocation motion at high pressure / high strain-rate conditions where the data are sparse, and come from indirect measurements dominated by the effect of dislocation density. The molecular dynamics (MD) simulation technique arises as a valuable tool to get insights into the plasticity mechanisms by which metals accommodate deformation. In this seminar we will review the basics of the technique and MD simulation results will be presented where the tool is applied to the study of nanoindentation, high strain-rate compression and high strain-rate tensile tests of metals and metallic foams. We will focus on the plasticity mechanisms taking place in each case.
