Resumo:
All around us we see a highly organized world, and beyond us we see a universe full of structure. How can this be? Processes involving dissipation and decoherence are and always have been ubiquitous, throughout space and time, and these inexorably destroy structure and organization.
Let's start by admitting we don't know the full answer to this question. But we now know a great deal. I will begin by explaining how decoherence and dissipation actually work in Nature, giving examples from sub-nuclear physics to cosmology. I will then discuss how the universe reverses these – key elements of this involve "quantum monogamy", gravity, and catalysis. The result is that local structures can form and grow ever more sophisticated as time goes on. I will pay particular attention to the physics of decoherence (in which a quantum system "entangles" with its environment), and recoherence (where the quantum "disentangles" with its environment).
Some of the history of this subject is very colourful, and I will tell some interesting stories.
