Title: Peering inside neutron stars
Profa. Jaki Noronha-Hostler (University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign)
Abstract: In 2017 the first measurement of gravitational waves from a merger of binary neutron stars was observed by LIGO/Virgo. Shortly before the two neutron stars collide they deform under the influence of their gravitational pull. This deformation is quantified by their tidal deformability, which encodes information about the interior of neutron stars. Additionally, radius measurements of neutron stars are now possible using X-Ray measurements from NICER. When one combines these constraints on the properties of neutron stars, the interior appears to have a surprising feature. To support heavy neutron stars that were recently measured by NICER and one mystery object from LIGO/Virgo, neutron star matter seems to display a speed of sound that nearly approaches the speed of light. The consequences and direct observability of such a large speed of sound are explored.
